one thing remains
I have been meditating upon and singing the song One Thing Remains quite a bit lately. As you probably know, the chorus to this song goes like this, "Your love never
fails, it never gives up, it never runs out on me. Your love never fails, it never gives up, it never runs out on me. Your love never fails, it never gives up, it never runs out on me. On and on and on and on it goes, it overwhelms and satisfies my soul, and I never, ever, have to be afraid, one thing remains..."
What a powerful and unchanging truth these lyrics reveal about our God! His love NEVER fails, and it NEVER gives up, and it NEVER runs out on anyone who places their faith in Jesus. In fact, this is exactly what Paul was trying to get across in the book of Romans chapter eight.
In Romans 8:38-39 Pauls affirms, "I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death, nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow - not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below - indeed, NOTHING IN ALL CREATION WILL EVER be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord."
This is a crucial truth that every believer must not only know, but believe, and cling to during every season of life.
If Jesus is our Lord, then there is no place we can ever find ourselves that would cut us off from the love of God. Not in times of difficulties, not in times of testing, and not even in our times of disobedience.
In fact, when we look at the Bible, we can clearly see that Gods love is with us through all aspects of our life. Through the difficult times, in the midst of testings, and even in those times when we are disobedient.
1. God's Love is with us during DIFFICULTIES (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
The first area of our life that the Bible tells us we can have assurance that God still loves us, are in those times of difficulties.
The Bible tells us, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
This passage of Scripture tells us that God desires to "comfort us in all our tribulations..." It is not God's desire to comfort us in some of our trials, but ALL of them!
What are you going through right now? Whatever difficulty you are facing, whatever it is that is causing your heart to be filled with pain, sorrow, or even utter hopelessness, it is our God's one and only desire to bring comfort to you right now.
2. God's Love is with us during times of TESTING (Mark 1:11-13)
The second area of our lives that the Bible tells us we can have assurance that God still loves us, are in those times of testing.
The Bible tells us, "Then a voice came from heaven, 'You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts: and the angels ministered to Him" (Mark 1:11-13).
What is so fascinating about this passage is the fact that this was Jesus' official inauguration from the Father into His earthly ministry. He had just been baptized by John the Baptist, and then the heaven's opened up, and God the Father spoke. What did He say? He said, "You ARE MY beLOVED Son, in whom I am WELL PLEASED!"
In other words, the Father just testified of the Son, by saying "I LOVE YOU! And I am WELL PLEASED with You." And then, within the blink of an eye something incredible happens. The Bible says, "Immediately" after God the Father says this to Jesus that the Spirit of God "drove" Jesus into the wilderness for forty days in order to be tempted and tested to the fullest by Satan!
This shows us that even when we are facing the severest of trials, God is still with us and He still loves us. Jesus is a perfect example to us that even when we are going through the most difficult of testings, God's love never fails us.
3. God's Love is with us during our times of DISOBEDIENCE (Hebrews 12:5-11)
The third area of our lives that the Bible tells us we can have assurance that God still loves us, are in those times when we are being disobedient to God.
The Bible tells us, "And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: 'My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD. Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives" (Hebrews 12:5-6), "... God's discipline is ALWAYS good for us, so that we might share in His holiness" (Hebrews 12:10b).
Here we see that even when we have blown it, and are living in some type of disobedience to God, that when He chastens us for our sin, that it is motivated by His love for us, and not His anger at us.
I hope that I have shown you in this article that no matter where you find yourself at right now, one thing remains, and that is God's love for you will never fail! During your lowest points in life, God's love will never fail. During your most difficult times of testing, God's love for you will never give up on you. During those times when you are running from God in disobedience, His love for you never runs out. On and on and on and on it goes, it overwhelms and satisfies your soul, and you never, ever, have to be afraid, one thing remains..." and that is the undeniable fact that...
