the passion

As I am preparing my heart to hear from God this Easter season, I began thinking about a poem that I wrote a couple of years ago. I was inspired to write this poem back in 2009. It travels from His Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, to His Suffering on the Cross at Calvary, to His Victory at the Empty Tomb.

The Passion

On the darkest of nights
where one life dwells
I found in a Garden
him fighting with Hell

There was sweat filled with blood
and prayers full of grief
Agony, suffering
pleading for relief

But no one would listen
not Father, nor friends
When the traitor came
it was surely the end

He was exposed by a kiss
which was part of the plan
Horrific suffering and wrath
as death drew near to this Man

His friends forsook Him
His family fled
Abandoned by all
He would soon be dead

He was spit upon, and mocked
beaten and flogged
He was given a cross
and commanded to walk

In pain and weakness
He climbed that great hill
With onlookers following
and His blood being spilled

Finally the moment
had ceased for all time
They were hammering in nails
to this Man with no crime

It was for sinners, and wretches
the transgressions of all
that He suffered and bled
to restore the fall

He cried out, "It's Finished"
then darkness fell
Surely Satan believed
it was victory for Hell

The earth began trembling
and creation shook
But this Man remained silent
as He died next to crooks

Then His spirit was offered
His work had been done
And three days later
the victory was won

The grave could not hold Him
nor the enemies plans
For it was the Power of God
that Raised up this Man

With death now defeated
our sins now removed
The Son of God has Risen
and offers new life to you
