The Unfortunate Truth!

This past Sunday we looked at Romans 8 in a message titled, Leaving your Baggage Behind. We discovered in Romans 7, that Paul presents the unfortunate truth every one of us has to deal with in life and that is effects of our sin nature, and how helpless we are to overcome it no matter how committed we are to trying. We get the sense that it was with great frustration that Paul cries out, “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:24).

We also discovered that it doesn’t matter how much effort we put into having a Christ-honoring attitude or how committed we are in trying to live like Jesus, we cannot in our own strength permanently resist the indwelling power of sin. And therefore we will repeatedly experience defeat and frustration.

However, the hope we did find in Scripture, is the same hope that Paul himself had for overcoming the inner wretchedness that lurks within him, and that is that we can have victory through our faith in Jesus. Paul proclaimed, “I thank God for Jesus Christ my Lord!” (Romans 7:25), for delivering him from his helpless state.

When a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ, they have access to every single promise contained in the Word of God that applies to God’s children, including the promise to be free from the bondage and baggage that comes from living life in a fallen world.

How did God speak to you through this message?

What was the most important truth He revealed to you?

How can you take this truth and apply into your life this week?
