The Making of a Leader

The book is designed to help identify the patterns, processes, and principles of a person’s life that God uses to develop a leader. The author does this by dividing the life of the leader up into six stages of leadership development. These six stages are surrounded by certain checks and balances to be used as markers for each leader’s life to help clarify where they are within the process.

Many people do not understand how to decipher God’s purpose for their life, nor the means by which God has brought them to where they are currently at, or where He is preparing to take them. This book teaches the reader how to recognize the lessons of their lives, and the leadership stage that they are currently at in their lives.

The author states, “God develops a leader over a lifetime” and that “All leaders can point to critical incidents in their lives where God taught them something very important” (p.25). By developing awareness of the six stages of leadership growth, the checkpoints that are associated with each stage, and finally where a person is within this development process, readers will be able to identify a number of important facets of leadership. They will be able to better identify those with leadership characteristics, as well as help direct the development of those leaders.

This is a book that can help answer the question; “Have I really been called to this ministry?” By using the six “Phases” (a phase is a unit of time that Clinton labels “Sovereign Foundations, Inner-Life Growth, Ministry Maturing, Life Maturing, Convergence, and Afterglow” p.44) in a person’s life, such as the important events that have occurred in the readers life during any particular phase, the reader can begin to develop a practical method for understanding God’s purpose and direction for their life.

They will also be able to see more clearly why God has them where they currently are, where God has brought them from, and where God is leading them to in the future. The author takes a fresh approach in the area of leadership by clearly exhibiting that leadership flows more from a person’s being, rather than a persons training, or any set of given methods that the church is incorporating at any given time.

The reader will thank the author for showing the importance of developing a ministry philosophy which will help aid in creating an effective ministry. My life as a leader for God has been truly touched by this fresh approach to The Making of a Leader, and I am still referring back to some of its life-changing principles years later.

I am confident that this book will aid the reader in recognizing God’s hand upon their life and the direction that He is taking them in the future.
